Training Academy

Munich

2009 -

The building at the junction of Brienner / Augustenstraße in Munich is an adult training center with the objective of training retail trade professionals.
The client, the Akademie Handel e.V. Munich, a subsidiary of the Bavarian trade associations, engaged Popp Streib Architects 2009 with the stepwise restructuring of the training and administration areas.
The building, architect Josef Schumann Munich, was completed in 1954 and since then rebuilt several times. It is a building in solid construction and partly - for example in facades - in reinforced concrete skeleton construction.
The sensitive structure of solid walls and preloaded reinforced concrete ribbed ceilings requires high standards on planning and execution.
Condition of the client for the building projects was the minimum disturbance of the training operation. The conversions were therefore limited to only one floor per year.
Execution and completion under the direciton of PS architects took place within the 4-week no lessons period in the summer after detailed planning and tendering in advance.
Essential aspects of the overall concept for the building, developed between owner and architect, are the structural upgrading of the buildings interior and exterior as well as the increase of comfort for the training and administrative spaces by installing state-of-the-art cooling and ventilation technology.
Particular attention was devoted to dismantling and style appropriate conversion into spatially and functionally clearly structured areas, taking into account the architectual-design concept and the specific intentions of the original design from the fifties.
